The Carrefour Foundation supports donation networks, enabling struggling communities to access food that has gone past its best before date. Waste reduction, improved distribution and enhanced consumption are all essential steps in the transition to food solidarity.
We also promote nutrition programmes and support the development of solidarity-based restaurants and grocery shops. Solidarity-based grocery shops in particular are places for communities to meet and communicate, while purchasing everyday consumer products for a fraction of their usual price. These businesses are also a port of call for people looking to get back into sustainable work; many employees are former recipients.
The Farinez’vous bakery gives the people of France another way of consuming one of their favourite products — bread. Committed to sustainable development and the employment of people undergoing professional reorientation, it is currently involved in a project to recover unsold products. The current main focus of the project is brewing beer.
In addition, Farinez’Vous aims to set up a working group with other partners (shopkeepers, caterers, millers, bakers and other partners of the Carrefour Foundation) to combat food waste.
In Seine-Saint-Denis, the Re-Belle association collects unsold fruit and vegetables from its retail partners every week. The produce is transformed into jams and chutneys, which are then sold in the shops where the produce originally came from. In 2019, 34 tonnes were saved, producing 80,500 pots!
